Pros

The majority of coworkers are nice and great to work with. There are a handful of managers across the entire company that actually care about you.

Cons

From my experience, almost all middle managers are middle-aged white people who are either mildly to moderately racist or mildly to moderately sexist. Your organization's leadership will do the bare minimum to help you. They heavily play favorites and consistently offer all of the interesting opportunities to the attractive white women in the team. They will prioritize funding employees to go to SWE conferences but conveniently run out of money for employees to go to NSBE, SHPE, and SASE conferences every year. I brought up how other employees made racial jokes at my expense and how another manager made sexist comments at my director to my boss. In response to that, my boss said that's just how society is and brushed it off. All the while touting how Medtronic is so great at DEI and is so inclusive every other day. My manager also made racist comments to my face about twice a month during our 1:1's. Everyone is forced to spend time every quarter to fill out Organizational Health Surveys only for the feedback to be completely ignored. The managers will beg everyone to artificially inflate the OHS results because they don't want the VPs to force them to take action. Honesty is looked down on and criticism on leadership's actions only get you laid off. The company consistently makes bad acquisitions of startups with products that aren't manufacturable thus not profitable. Every year is cost center reductions and benefits are getting worse and worse over time. This place is a sinking ship. All of my coworkers are actively looking for opportunities elsewhere while ensuring they get their work done. I would not recommend working at this company.

Pros

Strong business impact You often help maintain or improve systems tied to quality, compliance, and product reliability. That can make the work meaningful and visible. Cross-functional exposure The role usually interacts with Quality, IT, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and sometimes R&D. That can build a broad network and good business understanding. Specialized, marketable skill set Experience with quality systems, validation, documentation, audits, and regulated applications can be valuable, especially in medtech, pharma, and other regulated industries. Good mix of technical and process work If you like solving system issues but also improving workflows and controls, this role can be a strong fit. Career mobility It can lead into areas such as: Quality systems management Validation or CSV Regulatory systems Business systems analysis Program or product ownership Compliance leadership

Cons

Heavy documentation burden A lot of the work may involve change control, validation records, SOP alignment, traceability, and audit readiness. That can feel slow or administrative. High compliance pressure Mistakes in quality applications can have significant downstream effects. The role often carries risk sensitivity and scrutiny. Slower pace of change In regulated environments, even simple updates may require formal review, testing, approval, and training. That can be frustrating if you prefer fast execution. Competing priorities You may have to balance user requests, system issues, compliance needs, and audit deadlines at the same time. Limited creativity in some environments Depending on the team, the role may be more about control, stability, and process discipline than innovation.
