Decent place to work if you want a modest amount of hours - Cashier Meijer Employee Review

Pros

For the most part, the pay is pretty decent. I'm pulling around 9.80 per hour, as compared to 7.50 at my last job from years back. The team leaders and store directors are usually pretty nice and professional when dealing with the non-salaried employees. The store generally gives opportunities to work in a variety of departments, which can be useful in resumes. The 10% discount on general merchandise is nice, and every once in awhile the company sends coupons for an additional 20% off GM, HBC and grocery if sales are particularly good.

Cons

Despite the volume of customers shopping daily in many of the stores, Meijer seems to only want to give less than 30 hours a week to Part-Time employees; I'm not sure if this is due to poor performance of other stores, or due to actual corporate policies. Pay is not high enough to justify hour cuts. Many stores favor hiring many new employees over giving current employees hours. Departments are generally understaffed on a day-to-day

Pros

Direct coworkers were great to work with. I also enjoyed being left to do my work and not babysat by management.

Cons

Management doesn't know what they are doing. Resets and floor plans were regularly not done properly. The store I worked at has a skeleton crew so I never got help (but was expected to stop everything I'm going to go help other departments/areas). Also meaning good luck to any customers needing help, especially when I was the only person working my area of the store, so when I wasn't there, no one was. Management also regularly disappeared into the offices or were on vacation. Also was terminated for reasons outside my control even though I was told they look at the reasons for attendance incidents before termination. Never got to get the FMLA or accommodation to my doctors before being terminated two days after I requested them. Didn't bother asking for a raise either. I did multiple times and got nothing.
