Pros

They're flexible with scheduling and have a good work/life balance.

Cons

The pay needs to be better. Their wages are not competitive at all. Because of this, the store has widespread staff shortages. You end up doing the work of 2+ people. Since it is so short staffed, sometimes food expiration dates become dangerously close to being past due. However, Meijer corporate still expects the store to function at peak performance levels. Corporate expects you to help the customer even when your department isn't open yet, which means an already short staffed department cannot get anything done (food prep, sanitation, etc.). [What is the point of having hours then?] It is rare for department supervisors to work any other shift than their regular day shift. Sure, they do the occasional graveyard to count inventory, but they should be responsible for working swing/closing shifts each week, to help the department run efficiently.

Pros

Direct coworkers were great to work with. I also enjoyed being left to do my work and not babysat by management.

Cons

Management doesn't know what they are doing. Resets and floor plans were regularly not done properly. The store I worked at has a skeleton crew so I never got help (but was expected to stop everything I'm going to go help other departments/areas). Also meaning good luck to any customers needing help, especially when I was the only person working my area of the store, so when I wasn't there, no one was. Management also regularly disappeared into the offices or were on vacation. Also was terminated for reasons outside my control even though I was told they look at the reasons for attendance incidents before termination. Never got to get the FMLA or accommodation to my doctors before being terminated two days after I requested them. Didn't bother asking for a raise either. I did multiple times and got nothing.
