Pros

Depending on your department and your supervisor, Mercer can be a great place to work. While I was there, the benefits were great including a very low deductible (less than $1000) for health insurance, free bonus vacation days during Christmas when the university as closed, staff appreciation days, free tickets to athletic and arts events, and a beautiful campus. HR is probably one of the best offices I have worked with in my career. Most faculty and staff are warm and easy to work with.

Cons

As the new football program emerged and basketball program got better and Mercer's non-academic interests such as Newtown Macon and College Hill programs with the Knight Foundation got bigger, the focus on regular students and academics seemed to diminish. I saw colleagues from other departments fight for funding to keep their programs at the highest level. I saw one dean retire early because he was done fighting for money his program brought in, that was being used by others. Make one wrong move, and the president will make sure you are gone. Too many good people have "retired", "moved on" or "volunteered to leave" while trying to make a positive difference. I also observed folks moving on because there was no way for them to really move forward in their careers, no true promotional opportunities, and rise hikes were very limited due to strict budgets.
