Pros

1) Teaches you to be patient 2) You have job security 3) Improves your presentation skills and helps to learn how to sound/look/pretend smart :) 4) Most people are rewarded with some job after you complete your degree.

Cons

1) Poor management of department to aid students to graduate. You have to figure out all your own. 2) Most faculty does not have funding. You may have to compromise your field of interest and choose a different one instead. 3) Duration to get a PhD is 6 yrs or more . I have seen people quitting even after 5 yrs without getting a PhD 4) There is no administrative body to monitor how adviser treat his/her research graduate students and a lot of them treat badly.

Pros

The HPC facilities (HPCC, ICER) offer excellent access for research affiliates colpaborating with university researchers, with Slurm job scheduling and a well-managed site-specific wiki.

Cons

Annual account renewal can be a bit bureacratically clunky at times, and the Research Affiliate may have to coordinate with multiple departments and the associated PI if a system update breaks part of a legacy system.
