Pros

It's managed like a bunch of different companies, and each has its own cultural differences. It's fairly easy to move from one part to another. Work/life balance can be good, depending on where you are. Benefits are decent; time off especially good.

Cons

Little opportunity for career advancement. Low pay. Micro management is very common, as are faculty with over-sized egos.

Pros

The HPC facilities (HPCC, ICER) offer excellent access for research affiliates colpaborating with university researchers, with Slurm job scheduling and a well-managed site-specific wiki.

Cons

Annual account renewal can be a bit bureacratically clunky at times, and the Research Affiliate may have to coordinate with multiple departments and the associated PI if a system update breaks part of a legacy system.
