Pros

Laid back work environment, family friendly, vacation time accrues at 8 hours/mo for the first five years then 12hrs/mo and after ten years 16hrs/mo. East Lansing is a great place to live and Michigan State offers a lot of multicultural festivals, a performing arts center, Big Ten sports etc. Low cost of living.

Cons

Benefits do not include good dental package or any vision. Pay is lower than in industry. The bureaucracy of a large university can be hard to manage and there is rampant nepotism, again something characteristic of universities.

Pros

The HPC facilities (HPCC, ICER) offer excellent access for research affiliates colpaborating with university researchers, with Slurm job scheduling and a well-managed site-specific wiki.

Cons

Annual account renewal can be a bit bureacratically clunky at times, and the Research Affiliate may have to coordinate with multiple departments and the associated PI if a system update breaks part of a legacy system.
