Pros
Good benefits, especially vacation time for specialists and academic staff.
Cons
The pay is sh*t, and the Univesity expects many qualifications for even low level positions. The University bureaucracy is intolerable. Management is abhorrently bad and impractical. Lou Anna Simon is "Ms. Political Correctness" and this attitude is pervasive throughout. Women and minorities are favored for high-level positions, independent of their qualifications and the availability of suitable, more qualified applicants. The Unions and University policy prohibit the various units from hiring people they want, and force hiring based on senority, presence on the "lay-off list", and force hiring units to post jobs they have every intention of filling with pre-selected candidates. This wastes the time and energy of applicants seeking to enter or move up in the University, as well as the time of the hiring unit staff. MSU is very much a "spoils system" of promotion - a real "ole boys" network, especially among the academics. For research based positions, they prefer the young and/or the foreign. Union influence in the University stifles growth, innovation, and job opportunities. Moreover, the University bureaucracy binds the hands of the research and outreach centers, making it virtually impossible for them to survive and operate effectively.
