Low salaries, work expectations same as corporate world - Information Technologist II Michigan State University Employee Review

Pros

Flexible time, variety of work, challenge of learning new technologies, fair amount of deadwood to compete against for very limited merit raises, most people have nice work environments. Job security is still a little better than corporate, especially for older IT workers.

Cons

The pay is much lower than corporate world (for IT, that is, system administrators and programmers), and while 20 years ago there was low stress in the job to offset that, these days staffing is generally stretched thin, resulting in nearly as much stress as I had in corporate world for most of my career.

Pros

The HPC facilities (HPCC, ICER) offer excellent access for research affiliates colpaborating with university researchers, with Slurm job scheduling and a well-managed site-specific wiki.

Cons

Annual account renewal can be a bit bureacratically clunky at times, and the Research Affiliate may have to coordinate with multiple departments and the associated PI if a system update breaks part of a legacy system.
