Pros
The university means a lot to the community and furthering their mission means a lot to me as a member of that community. Pay is market average but can occasionally be negotiated. Benefits are good, some of the best in the state. Some very smart and capable and caring middle and upper management.
Cons
Everything takes a long time at MSU. Hiring, firing, promoting, raises, even simple organizational changes are subject to deep bureaucratic scrutiny and approval loops. HR actions can take months with little to no information available about timelines or reasons for the delay. Everyone everywhere seems to be understaffed and overwhelmed and we were losing people to burnout left and right when I was there.
