Pros

Benefits package is better than most in this area. If you are interested in continuing your education while working then this is a good place to work. Most departments (depending on management/supervisor) will work with you on job flexibility.

Cons

Many positions are union-based. There are several unions on campus and none seem to benefit the majority of its members. A good working employee could do better on their own. Also, not all units pay its employees the same as other units for positions that are similar. This is definitely a discrepancy that the university needs to address. Career advancement is possible but rarely happens overnight. Too often the university will hire from the outside before promoting from within:(

Pros

The HPC facilities (HPCC, ICER) offer excellent access for research affiliates colpaborating with university researchers, with Slurm job scheduling and a well-managed site-specific wiki.

Cons

Annual account renewal can be a bit bureacratically clunky at times, and the Research Affiliate may have to coordinate with multiple departments and the associated PI if a system update breaks part of a legacy system.
