Great benefits, limited growth potential - Management Analyst Michigan State University Employee Review

Pros

A benefits package that can't be beat. Combined with the low cost of living in mid-Michigan, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Cons

For staff positions, the university has not invested in promotion structures. This leaves non-faculty employees with few options beyond leaving if they want to grow their careers. Also, MSU does not invest in supervisor training, so bad supervisors are common.

Pros

The HPC facilities (HPCC, ICER) offer excellent access for research affiliates colpaborating with university researchers, with Slurm job scheduling and a well-managed site-specific wiki.

Cons

Annual account renewal can be a bit bureacratically clunky at times, and the Research Affiliate may have to coordinate with multiple departments and the associated PI if a system update breaks part of a legacy system.
