Pros
Beautiful location. I loved living in Houghton. The area is beautiful, the campus is beautiful, and the opportunities on campus are good--arts, gym, ski slopes, etc. Drive 15 minutes in any direction, and you hit a gorgeous lake. Cost of living is low, and restaurant variety is exceptional, especially considering how remote it is. There are at least three really exceptional Chinese restaurants in the area, representing different distinct culinary areas of China, something that I actually miss since I've moved away.
Cons
The school is run with an eye to profit rather than education. Administration will not have your back when faced with student issues. The biggest problem is that they have no minimum TOEFL score to enter the university, so students who have enough money can come over with no English at all, thinking that they are going to be able to take classes. The school is not up front with the students, so when the students get here and have to take 2+ years of exclusively ESL classes before they even begin on their major classes, they are understandably angry. They expect a 4 year degree, and instead end up spending 6. Some lose scholarships if they can't get through ESL quickly enough, and there's nothing we can do as instructors, once they're here, to make it more fair for them.
