Pros

Easy to keep your head above water, by mostly keeping your head down and doing what is asked of you in a manner that is consistent with past efforts. Pay is decent, and exam support is pretty good.

Cons

Hit or miss on whether your superiors care on training you or not. They are all trying to get their year end bonuses. Helping you learn the in's/outs of the industry will only occur if they make the calculation that you will in turn make them more money in their bonus. There are extremely bright and motivated people that work here (albeit not charismatic). There are also people who take advantage of the laissez-faire attitude re hiring/firing and by virtue of tenure or social connections, will persist indefinitely like remoras on the belly of a whale. Moving up in the company is more a function of time than effort. Pass your exams, do the work that is fed to you, don't show up drunk. Overall, complaints are probably similar to other insurance consultancies; innovation resistant, boom-bust cycles of heavy work and then drought. Exams suck... Actuarial profession has thrived off of the regulatory capture enveloping the insurance industry. Trains smart and careful people, but if it weren't against the law to avoid actuaries, I doubt they'd be the big cheese they are.
