Pros

Colleagues are down to earth and friendly. Some perks for Rochester-based employees - outings to baseball games & other events in the city Reasonable growth opportunities as the business has grown in the last year. Compensation is just ok. Very good WLB. I have never worked overtime. SOW contractor teams at Paychex are not expected to provide overtime except in rare circumstances. You are not compensated for overtime, but this has not been an issue for me yet... You could easily come in as a developer and coast for years if you are not interested in growing as an engineer or moving into management.

Cons

In professional services (paychex SOW contractors) there is a relatively low skill ceiling for engineers, even if your team is working on the new stack (Spring Boot microservices, kafka). There's always a chance that when your project wraps up you will be reassigned to a maintenance project on a product that's a dead-end from a technology perspective. The culture is not engineering driven. Career path for engineering-focused developers is towards solution lead and solution manager, but these roles seem to provide fewer opportunities for developing engineering skillsets. All upward paths lead to management, away from tech. Maybe not a con for all, but a SOW team is not the place to grow as an engineer after the first 1-3 years of your career. The health plans are equivalent to having no coverage at all if you are a remote worker living in any state other than NY. Moreover they offer an HRA instead of an HSA, the latter of which would be way more advantageous for many employees. You can decline the HRA and contribute to your own HSA but the employer will not contribute to your HSA as they would the HRA.

We practice engineering in every aspect of what we do but it isn’t limited to simply software engineering. Our top engineers become highly regarded and sought out by our clients when they can apply their impressive engineering skillset to problems beyond writing code. Our HR team is currently reviewing our health plans for 2023, and while not final, some exciting things are in the works to improve our current offerings. Stay tuned on that! We encourage you to work with your manager on the items that are less than favorable for you in hopes that you find the best fit possible.
