Pros

Job security: Once you get past the probationary period, its very difficult to get fired. The folks working in the colleges (staff and faculty) are fairly easy to work with.

Cons

President Waded doesn't care about the staff at all. MSU / UIT will pay you the absolute lowest amount of money they can. When I originally applied for this position, the UIT HR person (no longer works there) was planning on offering me BELOW the starting salary. I was told this information by another person in HR that I trust. They are losing people left and right for dumping more work on them with no additional pay. When people do get offers somewhere else, nothing is done to retain them. UIT (central IT "on" campus) has no idea what is going on on campus. The majority of them are off campus in a rented building and make decisions based on what they think is right for campus without ever talking to faculty and staff. They have no idea what the needs of researchers, faculty or staff have because they don't actually work with them. There are a small group of "embedded" IT folks on campus (that's where I worked) and they have a much better idea of what the needs of the campus are because they actually work in person with faculty, staff and researchers. Other than horrible pay, incompetent leadership and being surrounded by "typical" government workers you also have to pay to park on campus as an employee. You have to pay for the "wolf" pass or higher to have a guaranteed spot on campus. The cheaper options oversell the lots so unless you get to work 15 minute or more before 8am and don't leave on lunch, you can spend 15 minutes driving around trying to find a spot. I honestly cant think of any reason to work at MSU or especially in IT at MSU. They will say "the benefits are great" and that's actually not the case anymore. So many other places are much more competitive and at a minimum, pay significantly more.

Pros

Paid for my masters degree

Cons

Administration has historically not prioritized graduate students. No healthcare or access to many on campus services without additional fees. Graduate students are explicitly seen as a financial drain on the university.
