Pros

Being so large with a big number of different divisions, offices and locations worldwide, I never felt I was short of ways to expand my learning and experiences within the company. Most days there would be an invitation to an internal presentation etc that anyone could join. The firm also has and continues to have an impressive portfolio of projects worldwide, and has a great reputation within the engineering consultancy sector. However, do not expect every project you work on to be as exciting as Hong Kong airport or the new Leeds station. There are some genuinely great minds to learn from and develop with. I worked in an office and division with a literally world-renowned associate professor of Transport Modelling, who was always chairing conferences in Australia etc. He was a great guy and if this is what you want to do, then Motts has the scope and reputation for you to be really successful, and to work your way up through the ranks. Loads of people I worked with had been there for 10+ or even 15+ years, which shows that if this is your passion, then Motts is a good company for the long term. Finally, 95% of the people I worked with I really liked. They place an emphasis on collaboration which means in your team, and very frequently between teams, you work together and discuss a lot, which is satisfying and leads to better quality outcomes. It also allows everyone to deploy what they are best at, and everyone to continually learn new things. They are also very comfortable with flexible working: three people on my team worked 2-3 days a week pretty much when they liked.

Cons

I was only there for 8 months, but as a recent graduate I never had enough to do. I would estimate around 15% of my time overall was spent asking others if there was any work for me to do, or reading the news. My area seemed to be on a significant hiring initiative in anticipation of plenty of projects coming our way, which never really materialised. They thus wondered why project budgets kept running out of money - people had to put their time down to something. Further to this, I never felt the management confronted this problem head on. In my experience, there was a lot of turning a blind eye, which was seriously frustrating and ended up me thinking both them and I were wasting each other's time.
