Pros

Decent salary for a postdoc, though DC is very expensive. The research is world class and lots of available collaborations. Investigators are mostly fantastic and brilliant. Wonderful seminars by world-class scientists weekly. Lots of opportunities to present your work to the NIH community.

Cons

Very little opportunity to remain beyond your postdoc, which is limited to a 5 year max (this can be a big problem if your project(s) don't go perfectly). Your salary is more or less static for your entire postdoc. Very few opportunities for teaching or grant submissions.

Pros

Working with the some of the smartest scientists and clinicians in the world. So many learning opportunities. Kind patients. Allowed time to care for patients as there is no pressure of quotas by health insurance.

Cons

Nursing management can be verbally abusive with frequent retaliation and intimidation. As most older nurses have worked there for most of their career, they are dismissive of new perspectives and resistant to evidence-based practice.
