Good place for postdoctoral training as long as you work with a good PI - Visiting Fellow NIH Employee Review

Pros

Funding is generally sufficient such that people can focus on research. Health care is fully covered for the family. Good opportunities for conferences and training programs.

Cons

Lab culture depends on PI. Many would expect fellows work overtime/weekends. My PI assigns paper co-authorship by fellow seniority not actual contribution. Also, he would delay submission of a paper to next year if he already has one published that year and has nothing planned next year.

Pros

Working with the some of the smartest scientists and clinicians in the world. So many learning opportunities. Kind patients. Allowed time to care for patients as there is no pressure of quotas by health insurance.

Cons

Nursing management can be verbally abusive with frequent retaliation and intimidation. As most older nurses have worked there for most of their career, they are dismissive of new perspectives and resistant to evidence-based practice.
