Poor management but an ok summer job. - Recreation Aide NY Environmental Conservation Employee Review

Pros

A relativity easy summer job. Campers are typically pretty nice.

Cons

Management is lacking. Caretakers/assistant caretakers can be incredibly mean if they didn't hand select you. They play favoritism. They typically like one or two girls in the office, and let them do whatever, but everyone else is treated like an inconvenience. No one cares if campers are rude to you either. Pay sucks, it's minimum wage and even though they promise promotions...they never happen. When the higher ups stop in, everything goes haywire. They ALWAYS find something wrong with how the park is being run, but that always falls on the Rec Aides heads for some reason. You work the hardest on holidays and weekends. DEC doesn't seem to actually care about the environment or animals. One of my coworkers was threatened to be fired for saving a bird from fishing wire since it took him away from "what he was supposed to be doing."

Pros

Benefits (vacation, health insurance) are hard to beat compared to the private sector. The team I am with at the moment is great. NYSDEC offers a lot of flexibility (hybrid work and shorter week options)

Cons

More bureaucracy and a bit slower than the private sector.

Pros

-Almost impossible to lose your job if hired full-time (some people really abuse this) -Excellent work-life balance, only have to work 37.5 hrs, lots of vacation & sick time, work stays in the office -Lots of free time at work, low pressure

Cons

-Advancement is extremely rare, people don't want to leave and you have to take civil service exams that are hardly ever available, hiring process takes forever, NYHELPS hurts experienced staff, state gov is still obligated to post and interview even if they know they're hiring an internal candidate -Can't survive on Tech 1 salary -Super political, clique-y, so much gossip, judgment, negativity -Lots of free time because it's spent gossiping or just sitting around -Outdated technology and refusal to upgrade unless absolutely necessary -Did I mention judgment and negativity -The public is often unhappy to see you and tries to pick fights
