Beautiful Places. Ugly Faces - Park Ranger National Park Service Employee Review

Pros

Working in beautiful places and seeing areas most people don't see. When you find people that are best at the job they are usually incredibly smart and you can learn a lot from them.

Cons

Management is often bad on both Local and National levels. Lots of influence from politicians: -Government Shutdowns -Changing Priorities between administrations -Not being able to say things the politicians don't want to acknowledge (Global warming, impacts of different threats to the environment). Living on the park: -Living where you work makes the agency in charge of much more than your work. -Living with coworkers as housemates or neighbors only works if you are on good terms with them. Work life balance means your work is your life. Most start as seasonal and there is no job protection for them. Federal Government and NPS hiring policies often put under or non-qualified applicants into positions that much more qualified applicants should have gotten.
