Pros

The NTSB is the independent Federal agency that investigates accidents in all modes of transportation and makes recommendations to prevent those accidents from re-occurring. An agency Highly professional and dedicated staff, there is true commitment to the mission of the agency. Almost everyone says that coming to work at the NTSB was a "dream job". The agency was rated in the top 10 of the best small agencies to work at. The agency is widely respected for being a truth teller about the safety issues in transportation, which is sometimes an uncomfortable truth. But Capitol Hill and the media often seek out the advice of the agency. It is one of the few agencies that is widely respected on both sides of the aisle.

Cons

Like any other Federal agency, adequate resources is always a struggle. While management makes every effort to ensure that the staff have the adequate resources with which to accomplish the mission, it struggles to meet those needs with limited resources and working under short term funding. It is a top heavy agency, lots of GS-14 and GS-15's, so there are limited opportunities for advancement, particularly if you are interested in making it into the SES. That being said, there are excellent opportunities to learn and demonstrate those skills but you may have to leave the agency to gain that management/leadership opportunity.
