Pros

The HR benefits are pretty good in addition to time off. Depending on your manager, flexible telework but I elaborate on this below.

Cons

The white supremacy culture here is disgraceful. This is not only my experience but countless others who left and are looking to leave. Those with marginalized identities only last a couple years max. They know this, see it, and try to take the steps to plan out ways to combat this but when it comes to action, they willfully turn a blind eye because leadership can. The power holders and supervisors, which not shockingly are almost entirely white bodies, have gone out of their way multiple times to perpetuate this. There are reports from former and current employees of abuse of power, toxic teams, outright racism, microaggression, and harassment that have come from many people to only fall on deaf ears. These people, usually get a talking to, yet still hold these positions, are still promoted, are still supervising staff - staff of color too, and still make all the decisions to exert their power to try and keep others down. There are many forms of these acts that I heard from others and experienced such as over policing of time off and teleworking, whereas the white supervisor is never questioned, being held to higher standards and belittling staff of color on the team for their suggestions and ideas, being harassed for simply doing what one was hired to do because of personal insecurities and white fragility, pushing BIPOC staff attend and clean up after after work events on behalf of the team so others don’t have to, defacing personal property of BIPOC staff, not having a hiring interview process and designating friends or family members for positions, completing performance reviews and editing it a few days later to lower BIPOC’s staff scores, department heads directly stating that they “understand why people roll their eyes” at equity trainings, lying and spreading fake rumors about other BIPOC team members’ work performance to upper management, racist and privileged office discussions about how “if blackface isn’t allowed, whiteface shouldn’t be either” and “what countries are acceptable to vacation in” while degrading countries staff of color come from, and so many more. The reason this is written is to show that the injustices here range from microaggressions to extremely racist which continues to exist in the culture here. There is no leadership accountability - they put on a show to say this isn’t tolerated but then still perpetuate it then it’s business as usual. It’s a broken system that causes countless talent to leave while the benefitting scum remains.

Pros

- Staff are generally passionate, thoughtful, dedicated to the mission, and committed to collaboration and progress; have never worked with a more inspiring or supportive team - Work and organizational structure present opportunities to collaborate with diverse partners from across the world, both inside and outside NWF, which benefits the work and one's professional growth - True commitment to work/life balance, evidenced in both policies and messaging from leadership at multiple levels; incredibly valuable, especially for working parents and people navigating health and family issues - Teams are doing good and important work that's making a difference

Cons

- Limited potential for upward mobility - organization made welcome strides in recent years to standardize performance reviews, position descriptions, and salary bands, but rollout has been slow and confusing; in an attempt to put everyone on a level playing field leadership has blocked the ability of teams to support growth of deserving individuals; this prevents NWF from actually valuing and nurturing talent - Lack of accountability and strategic, values-based decision-making from executive-level leadership - leaders are great at couching decisions/updates in the language of humility and transparency, but outcomes and process is often anything but; staff are consistently met with defensiveness when they raise legitimate concerns about lack of clarity or shifts in programmatic structure that are unaligned with organization's strategic plan; this devalues the expertise of staff and fuels a demoralizing work environment; actions of CEO and supporting staff sometimes seem to be more interested in protecting CEO's potential future political career than the well-being of the organization they lead
