To begin with the products offered by the company itself, which are sold by account managers, are woefully inadequate; print adverts are virtually useless as the company continues to slash the number of papers they print across the board and their digital offerings would have been subpar in the 90s. Fundamental changes would often happen without sales staff being informed. On one occasion a customer of mine had to tour multiple towns to find a copy of the paper her advert was supposed to appear in; when she raised this issue with me I took it to editorial and was told the paper's circulation had been cut from over 7,000 to less than 400. Sales staff were not made aware of this until I relayed the information. The company's websites do not function properly and this results in a deluge of digital campaigns that under-deliver. It is not uncommon to see digital display campaigns with a 0.03% click through rate. The industry standard is 0.4. Need I say more? Now onto the management. They are overbearing and don't attempt to rationalise the KPIs they expect of their staff against effecting modern sales strategies. To say they are stuck in the 90s would be an understatement. None of them understand the purpose of their role and they spend most of their time either ineffectively micromanaging their staff or scheming ways to fool senior directors into believing they shouldn't be made redundant.
