You Get Out of It What You Put Into It - Mechanical Engineer Naval Sea Systems Command Employee Review

Pros

Better alternative to joining the navy. Best job on the peninsula west of Seattle, especially if you want to live in Kitsap County long term. Per diem money when you travel is tax free. Great paid leave, sick leave, every federal holiday is paid leave. Lots of opportunity for overtime, which is paid hourly. You can either disappear into the system, or stand out if you are more proactive and a go-getter. You get out of it what you out into it.

Cons

Very little incentive to work harder than your coworker; GS payscale. No discpline for workers who slack off. Upward mobility is pretty much capped at a GS12 unless you really look for the opportunity to become a GS13+. You have to report to the shipyard for work, no teleworking or working from home.
