Network Rail has a great mission to maintain and transform the UK railway. It is very well funded. Some great passionate people.
Cons
Very much a cliquey environment. I have observed various people being promoted or working in positions they are totally unsuited and /or unqualified for. However, because they are in the clique or have networked well they have been rewarded. The engineering side of the business is full of people who are not necessarily professionally qualified - this leads to a lack of excellence in professional standards, and as a Chartered Engineer, I have been frustrated by the lack of ability and innovation that results from this. Network Rail seems to value ‘linage’ in the Rail industry more than credentials and ability. This is disappointing and let’s the taxpayer down.
