Pros
Locally recognized brand, however as a media company people have very strong opinions on Newsday. Owned by Cablevision. Great people within company, many employees have been here for many years and moved around and up in the company which says a lot. Social work environment, people are very friendly and welcoming and willing to help. Professional and serious work environment, a pro if that is what you are looking for. Not a "micro-management" culture, people are allowed to do what they do best unless management is given reason to look at an employee closer.
Cons
Would be a fantastic company if pay was not on the significant low side. There is high turnover with many positions. Would not recommend young career minded people to stay here long, there's little mobility once you get to a certain point in many job roles, there is no training or career advancement plan for employees. Aging work force, handful of young employees in some departments but majority of staff is 50+ and technologically challenged. When comparing salaries to the NY market, significantly underpaying employees many of them have been there so long they don't know any better and are probably being taken advantage of. Many employee cuts over the years so less people doing the job many people once did (for no money.) Sales Employees do not receive performance pay increases, unless you change positions there are no pay increases for anyone. The health benefits are not Cablevision's, Newsday is on their own plan which is very expensive with high deductables. If you are a healthy single adult you may be OK, however if you are not, see a doc more then a few times per year or have a family you could be looking at several $100 a month for coverage and several $1000 to meet yearly deductibles. If you are interviewing ask a lot of questions about the cost of your coverage.
