      Poisoned Culture - Sinking Ship - Software Engineer Nordstrom Employee Review

      Pros

      The only positive things about Nordstrom IT is the retail discount and the friends you can make if you are on a team with good people.

      Cons

      Up until a few years ago, one of the best things about Nordstrom IT was the culture and the opportunities. All of that was destroyed when the CIO was replaced by a finance guy Dan Little with no technical expertise or interest. Dan retired in September and has yet to be replaced from what I hear. Dan brought together a team of vile upper management people that came up with an idiotic foolish management initiative called T.O.M. Constant reorgs, lack of vision and direction, poisonous envy of predatory cultures like at Microsoft and Amazon, no stability in the teams due to layoff after layoff has annihilated the culture and the other good things about working there. Anyone that has been there for a few years is constantly looking over their shoulders wondering if they are next to lose their jobs. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

      Decent base pay, somewhat autonomous, great tip potential.

      The company has changed for the worse since COVID. When I came back the mood of the entire store had shifted. Gone were the days of comradery, customer focus, and taking pride in a job well done. In its place there is a new culture of cutthroat sales, a severe decline in customer focus, and worst of all a new focus on profit over customer satisfaction. When I was told that the amount the store charged for a shoe shine was not enough to do the best job I could for a customer I knew things had gone downhill for the company. Not to mention I watch a manager prey on a mentally disabled person in order to secure a sale, when the person could not understand what was being offered. Sad that such a once great company is now just another greed ridden corporation.
