Pros

railroad pensions are good, ns also offers 401k, health care contributions are rising every though when measured with other industries we are good. personal days are accrued with years of service though we all, even the newest people qualify for three days. you must work a minimum of days to qualify for vacation, a almost 4 years service i currently have 2 weeks, with one week allowed to be taken one day at a time. the ns truly has hired the most diverse workforce i have ever experienced, as a matter of fact they promote it! the ns training program is an excellent on-the-job and formal program.

Cons

the work schedules are difficult, due to the nature of our business. normal sleep patterns are very difficult to maintain. working in a rain storm, a snow storm, high winds, at night, blazing heat is not for everyone. one must know how to dress for all as well as changing weather conditions. the type of high tech clothing is expensive, good rain wear is two to three hundred dollars. good work shoes gore-tex for general use and winter boots that are gore-tex and insulated are one hundred thirty-five dollars up to two hundred dollars plus for the winter versions. company provided eye wear is not very good.

Pros

Depending on the team you are in, it can be very flexible, and you’ll be working with nice people.

Cons

HR needs to step in more, they are supposed to set a precedent yet it seems like the higher ups in different departments actually set the expectations. Which can be toxic, and some managers clearly don’t know how to manage teams. HR seems to be a nice and fun department, but the rest of the company has lackluster reviews. Also, stop advertising a total rewards package to new hires when you need to work over fiver years to get some benefits and due to the merger they won’t actually get that package. Just raise your base salaries.
