Train crew - still decent pay and benefits, secure job but demanding hours - Locomotive Engineer (Train Operator) Norfolk Southern Employee Review

Pros

Union negotiated pay, Company paid insurance (200.00 month copay) You can make very decent money if and when your seniority allows you to work the higher paying jobs, long hours, layovers, various shifts are still required. 401k, Dental. Extreme focus on safe operations.

Cons

Entirely too many company rules / Government regulations, Compensation is not adequate for responsibility. Discipline when applied is arbitrary and not uniform. Senor employees are expected to be responsible and held accountable for the inexperienced without compensation. Away from home more than average. Start times can be any time (24 hours) or i.e. no regular sleep hours. In my judgment very top heavy company.

Pros

Depending on the team you are in, it can be very flexible, and you’ll be working with nice people.

Cons

HR needs to step in more, they are supposed to set a precedent yet it seems like the higher ups in different departments actually set the expectations. Which can be toxic, and some managers clearly don’t know how to manage teams. HR seems to be a nice and fun department, but the rest of the company has lackluster reviews. Also, stop advertising a total rewards package to new hires when you need to work over fiver years to get some benefits and due to the merger they won’t actually get that package. Just raise your base salaries.
