Pros

The ONLY pro. $31 hourly rate for a paramedic who sufficiently brown noses his/her way to up to paramedic II. The time off is nice as well, but it is in line with what all hospital based EMS agencies offer.

Cons

Forming a list is neccessary. 1) There are two females and one minority who have managed to crack the barrier up beyond a grunt in a department with 400+ employees. 2)You will always come last. 16 hour work days with no bathroom break or meal is typical. 3)incompetant schedulers require a total redo of everyones schedule every 6 to 12 months. 4)Managements answers to employees concerns. "....we have a stack of resumes this thick." 5)NO reliable means of communicating IMPORTANT information. ie When induced hypothermia protocols began, we didnt have coolers or cold fluid. Then one day, out of nowhere, with no comunication we do they are installed. 6)"We do not carry pediatric pulse ox probes because they are too expensive." This is what a manager said. 7)You have to put in for seniority based pto 6 months in advance and then it takes 4 months to actually approve or deny it. 8)The promotion to Paramedic II is for experienced Paramedics. It is routinely given to dispatchers with ZERO experience on an ambulance as a paramedic. 9)If you disagree with a manager at any time, your career is all but over. You will have eyes on you non stop. Look for another job. 10)Management operates with the assumption that you are the laziest stupidest creature alive. 11)Why are people with the same job duties paid up to $10K/year less even when they have more experience in some instances? 12)This departments has probably the highest turn over rate in the entire health system. People are hired and fired constantly 13)Requires mentioning again. If you are not a white male, born and raised and currently living in Nassau or Suffolk counties you will not fit in or be promoted. I am not a FORMER employee. I am a current employee, and in good standing.

Pros

Office setting; nice people, cafeteria

Cons

Overworked and severely underpaid, short staffed for the amount of patients they intake to the program (on the clinician side and administrative), very low pay for administrative workers, little to no real benefits (PTO is not front loaded but trickled in: 1 hour accumulated per pay period - it would take about 4 months to accumulate 1 full day of PTO. Sick time is a similar trickle system so you end up taking a lot of unpaid time until you can’t), due to that it’s impossible to not get burnt out. The union also hasn’t negotiated a good contract if these conditions exist for those at the basic level. Food in the cafeteria is not great and sometimes gives people the runs. Also it’s expensive (full price despite working for the org; they cannot even give discounts which is weird considering how much the CEO makes and how little we do). Feel abandoned and not properly compensated. Deeply exhausted.
