Pros
The compensation is far better than you’ll find at any other local third party administrator. Company leadership is open to suggestions and responsive to concerns. Nothing proved this more than the forum that was created at the beginning of the pandemic where associate could ask questions and provide suggestions to improve safety and maintain client expectations during an uncertain time. Team management is very much the same. They quickly address concerns and help to create an environment where employee strengths are elevated, and where weaknesses aren’t seen as irredeemable but rather an opportunity for improvement. Health and Welfare managers are adept at anticipating workloads and distributing the work in an equitable manner. I also appreciate that the management isn’t “reactive” but instead “proactive”. Managers encourage associates to express their ideas and concerns. By fostering this type of open exchange, they create an environment where everyone feels heard and feels the shared responsibility in the overall success of the department. My experience has been that management at NW Admin also understand that humans make human errors. If an error or mistake becomes a pattern, it’s quickly addressed. Well-written and concise guidelines are available to address common problems in the day to day work, but they are written in a way to let each associate also employ their critical thinking, training, and knowledge to each of those problems, rather than creating a “robotic” way of thinking. Having leadership who understands the work, timelines, and constraints the employees have to juggle also makes the employee’s time and effort feel more valuable. I’ve seen reviews that bring up concerns about dress code and time off policies. I suspect the more rigid dress code may pre-date my time with NW Admin because I’ve never felt constrained in the current policy. If that was the case in the past, I don’t think it was necessarily due to company culture but rather the industry culture and client expectations at that time. This company has been around a long time and they seem fairly adept at changing with the times. The expectations you have in any employer or employment position are also skewed by your own outlook. If you choose to see both sides, you’re less likely to feel negatively about the policies. This is true in regard to the vacation policy. Can you bank three years worth of vacation and then take 6 full weeks off? No. But, the policy in place helps ensure a level work/life balance. We all need a break from time to time. It’s better to take paid time off each year and recharge than to burn the candle at both ends. Just my two cents.
Cons
Parking at the Seattle office is no fun. However, this is the case for all Seattle based employers and not a reflection of NW Admin. If you can work from home or at one of the local satellite offices, it’s not a problem. If you have to work in the Seattle office, plan ahead and know your options: use public transportation, pay $7 a day to park in the lot across the street, or use the free street parking but note the signage and set reminders on your phone to move your car throughout the day.
