Pros
Everyone is very nice and helpful. It is a very rewarding job getting to help people map out their futures. As an intern, we go through a great training program to help us get our feet wet and understand a lot about the company. It was great working there during the summer because you get to meet other interns and work as teams. I love helping people understand what they can do with their money and plan for retirement. I have learned so much in the past few months and it has been great real world experience and I am so happy I got chosen as an intern. I also enjoy the freedom of being able to come and go as we please and that we are our own boss.
Cons
One of the biggest downsides for working at northwestern mutual financial network is that the compensation is straight commission. It is hard coming from a job where you know exactly what you are making to a job where it is up in the air. It all depends on the work you put into it. Which is great for those entreprenuerial types, but for others, it is hard. You also have to be a little confrontational with people and face a lot of awkward situations which most are not used to. Such as calling family friends and asking for referrals. In my opinion, it's a lot of challenging work, mentally, but anyone can stay strong and move past that!
