Oh man, where do I begin? Let's start with the pay. I stupidly decided to take the offer of $162,000 yearly as a primary care physician because I did not know my worth. When I tried to negotiate this, they said the pay was non-negotiable and instead increased my sign-on bonus, but added a three-year obligation to keep the sign-on which they didn't tell me about verbally, only when they sent the updated offer letter. Potential physician employees, please do NOT let them sweet-talk their way out of paying you well by talking about the vested interest you'll get in the company, etc. I asked what my potential pay could be and they said less than $200,00 after working there for several years; the average PCP *starting* salary fresh out of residency is 220-240K these days, and much more several years into practice. They say BS things like "we want the physician-patient relationship to be strong" as to why they don't have MAs and make physicians do menial tasks. Physicians operate at the absolute bottom of their license here, both labor-wise and and salary-wise. Ultimately, what they're doing is maximizing profits by keeping minimal staff and paying minimal salaries. Also, they tout that there are longer patient visits than the average clinic but a lot of that extra time is spent taking vitals, reconciling medications, etc. - all things that physicians do not normally do. Amazon has bought out this company. There is literally no moral compass. You can read articles about how the company has prioritized profits over patients by doing a quick Google search; I highly recommend the NPR article about this. Let's talk about the respect you deserve as a physician. One Medical sees NPs/PAs and physicians as equals. Physicians often report to midlevel providers as supervisors and have to have a midlevel read their notes in a spirit of "collaboration." NPs and PAs certainly play an important role in the modern landscape of healthcare, but equating them to physicians is dangerous and misleading. One Medical also has a company policy of referring to everyone as a provider alone in that same "collaborative" spirit, but this essentially wipes away important distinctions in provider training. This is extremely insulting to physicians. Everyone has to be on a first-name basis and you are not allowed to call yourself Dr. ___ to other providers, only your first name. Oh, the promise of a four-day workweek? It's false. Yes, you can see patients four days and have one day free of clinical duties. However, you have absolutely no admin time during the week so the fifth day off becomes an admin day unless you stay past working hours the other four days. Again, most clinics have MAs and/or nurses to help do some admin work for you, but not here. So their promise of work-life balance is also patently false. I cannot express my disgust with this company enough. I appreciate places that tell it like it is. Many concierge or DPC practices will say hey, we cater to rich clientele, we don't do underserved medicine, and your pay may be less than the average place but you'll get a great work-life balance. One Medical says hey, we love the underserved, you're getting paid a great salary, and you'll have an incredible work-life balance. The deception is what makes me loathe this place. Don't buy it. Look elsewhere.
