Pros

Pros: - Probably the "coolest company" in Virginia if you're looking for a Google-esque company culture - Fairly high hiring bar, so you're working with bright, talented people (just ask us) - Can be a good place for career growth if you're lucky - If you're passionate about energy efficiency, Opower's mission will motivate you - My compensation is competitive, and additional stock bonuses are a nice plus

Cons

- A "figure it out for yourself" mentality - I've learned how to think independently, but I do think I could benefit from some formal training. - Volatile work environment: I've been pretty fortunate at my time at Opower, but others haven't been as lucky. Business needs are constantly changing - for some people, this means promotions, and for others, it means "position eliminations". Sometimes, it seems like we just "try things out" before really thinking things through. - No 401k matching - They tell you you'll have a flexible work schedule but working from home is actually frowned upon - Meetings, meetings, meetings. Just...so many painful meetings. - Lack of funds. It seems like lately we're in a cost-cutting phase and it's difficult to get the funds for new tools and headcount.

Thank you for leaving us a review and sharing your perspective. It sounds like there are a lot of things you love, although you have a few concerns. In the last couple of years, we’ve experienced rapid growth and one of the most important things to us is maintaining our company culture, especially throughout our recent IPO. One of the People team’s main priorities in 2015 is to launch a management training program, as well as an initiative to further support all Oployees continuous learning – inside and outside Opower. We are also taking your other concerns to heart. I will be sure to pass along your feedback to senior management and the People team. - Sandy Hynes, SVP of People

Pros

Everyone was friendly to work with. Surprisingly well run as a company.

Cons

Not sure how their culture has changed after being acquired by Oracle. Betting it was for the worse.

Pros

Every day at Opower was inspiring - the people are smart, new ideas are always being brought to the table, and everyone is motivated to do their best work because the company is doing good things for the world. People take each other seriously at work but also have so much in common that you end up with many friends outside of the office, and those relationships range across all levels - I count my old manager as one of my closest friends and will always turn to some of the company's senior leadership for life and career advice.

Cons

Though things settled down a bit post-IPO, I'd still say work/life balance is tough at Opower. People work hard because they love what they do, but they're still working really, really hard. Also, the transition from one primary product line to multiple product lines has been rocky, particularly as oil prices have been tanking and screwing with the entire industry. As the energy world settles out so too will Opower, as long as they solidify their newer products.
