Pros

I made my own schedule, flexibility.

Cons

United Healthcare/Optum has a metric driven culture. The providers are expected to reach specific metrics each month. This is fine, except if members are not home, change their mind or forget then it is held against your monthly score. When this happens the only way to correct is to work on days off to try to accommodate the members or ask for extra members to compensate for those that did not show. It turns into a FT job chasing members and your numbers monthly. If you do not meet the expected monthly metrics an extra member is added to your schedule daily for a month with the expectation your metric will improve. Almost impossible to work in this culture. This company is so large that they do not have continuity down the pipelines which poses huge issues with those of us out in the field every single day. I have seen a pattern of conflicting information when I inquire about something and it seems that you get lost in the cracks. Constant changing and constant webinars which once you get acclimated to the "new way" of doing something it changes. I feel that Optum doesn't care about the clinicians out in the field because we can never get clear answers or support. Optum needs to sincerely reach out to all clinicians who are driving everyday seeing the members. Optum needs to respond to questions and our needs. Optum needs to be compassionate to each individual clinicians personal situation if one arises and reach out to us. Also, Optum needs to initiate PR positions who deal with the clinicians on a daily basis and teach all employees to be kind and respectful to us. We work very, very hard in the field and are not going into the best of conditions. The company has a high turn over for all these reasons, and the fact that some of the conditions we go into is not safe. Practitioners do not realize safety issues with going into some homes when they take the job, and some quit for that reason. The company really does not care about the clinicians out in the field.....it is very sad.

Pros

Some very talented people give so much of themselves to the company, the clients and their co-workers. I work with (and have worked with) some excellent, smart, supportive people.

Cons

Too many layoffs. Upper management is clueless about how the day to day work gets done, what it takes to make certain changes to processes, and how to treat employees. Some are great. Mostly, they just look at numbers. So many of us have been doing our jobs long enough to know what is needed for certain requests. But we don't get a voice. We just have to do it and suck it up. They are firing ('reduction in force') all of the seasoned staff and let the rest deal with the fall-out. So many teams are losing good people but those people are training their off-shore replacements before they are told about being cut. So how is that a reduction in force? It's just a reduction in payroll numbers. Everyone is on edge just waiting for the next axe to fall. And we have to try and learn or teach another role with less experienced people and more work. It's crazy. On milestone anniversaries, they send an email recognition but once the milestone gets to over 15 years, you are a target. Pay and benefits are fine by me. Raises are practically non-existent, even after layoffs and asking employees to take on more responsibility. that's messed up. They talk about work/life balance but that doesn't trickle down to the actual workers who are so stressed they fear for their jobs if they don't do the extra mile. Many of us are just hanging on instead of quitting so we can at least get some severance. Others are actively looking.
