Pros

-Wonderful clinicians -Newer facilities -Union Contract with AFSCME328 -Great benefits -Wonderful staff - Great ERG's

Cons

(Specific to Family Medicine, South Waterfront) - Toxic and incompetent management * terrible communication including but not limited to: outgoing messaging to patients, safety updates, clinic work flows, meetings, feedback, etc. * not capable of providing constructive feedback * feedback not provided until disciplinary action has begun * micromanaging * pettiness * divisive * dismissive * severe favoritism * disregards union bargaining agreements with the backing of HR business partner * no accountability * leadership actively discouraged staff from requesting merit based raises by stating that since staff are union represented, it is impossible to receive a merit based raise. This was later found out to be untrue. * leadership caught gossiping about staff, and when confronted (with receipts) all staff e-mail condemning gossip was sent out with no mention of accountability or apology. * Mgmt condemns any form of communication that does not involve them, and actively works to dismantle staff relationships in attempt to keep staff from talking to each other. - Staffing does not fluctuate with work load and when staff asked for additional assistance they were met with retaliation. - Inconsistent training - Unparalleled turn over - Complete lack of action and follow through when it comes to staff safety requests and protocols. Specifically after the bomb threat last year at a sister clinic. - No room for growth unless you leave the clinic/dept. - Statistical shortcomings placed on frontline staff without regard for frequent staff and clinician turn over. - Staff are only allowed 56 'protected' sick hours, regardless of how many hours you have accrued. FMSW is the only clinic at OHSU to have this policy. If you pass your protected sick hours, any additional time you take is counted as an occurrence and disciplinary action is taken after passing 3 occurrences. - Just like any institution, DEI is lacking significantly regardless of what is advertised.

Pros

Outstanding mission-driven organization with exceptionally talented, collaborative colleagues. I had the opportunity to work on cutting-edge ophthalmology clinical trials with multidisciplinary teams who genuinely cared about advancing patient care. The work was intellectually stimulating, there were many opportunities to learn, and I appreciated the culture of scientific curiosity and collaboration within the Casey Eye Institute.

Cons

Like many academic medical centers, organizational priorities can shift quickly with changes in funding. Decision-making can be slow, communication during organizational changes could be improved, and career advancement opportunities may be limited outside of traditional academic pathways. Funding uncertainty can affect long-term job stability for research staff.
