Pros
Connections for future jobs, particularly outside of Orvis. As a college student, I met an executive of a massive company who's should be hiring me after graduation. The career opportunities here mainly come from those who visit the store. Employee discount is fantastic. The products typically sell themselves, provided you know basic knowledge of it. 1% commission sounds low, but it starts adding up when you're selling $400 jackets.
Cons
Easily a tyrant can come in to local management, like the fishing manager at my store who's protected by our District Manager, who never checks in. This creates a culture very hostile and unwelcoming amongst coworkers. Comes with promise of upward mobility, but that isn't typically followed through from my understanding. The company constantly drops products, despite popularity and profitability. This can be very irksome when dealing with customers or even stuff you want for yourself. Little is done to qualm megalomaniacs who steal sales. I don't say that as someone spineless, being that I've 95% of the time met and exceeded my numbers. No holiday pay for those who are part-time. If I'm working 4th of July, most places would pay it I think. 1% commission is very low in the slow months, like February.
