If you like working a lot and don't desire much of a home life, This is the place for you. What used to be the trend setting HEMS company in the country has been decimated due to corporate stupidity. Great training, protocols, aircraft/maintenance, Pilots(for the most part) are great.
Cons
Management-Non existent at base/regional levels. Management is inept. Since the re-structuring of the company has taken place (and well before that, really), management has exhibited no leadership qualities whatsoever. A few examples: Always one to preach policy, management rarely follows it, but will be quick to admonish you if you commit the same infractions. Doesn’t waste drugs properly, doesn’t preflight, doesn’t brief with the crew because “managent has things to do”…. Try these practices yourself; you’ll be written up. ZERO interpersonal/conflict resolution skills. Inevitably, conflicts will arise at a base. Instead of choosing to solve them face-to-face, mass e-mails to all staff members are the preferred method of conflict resolution with management. These emails often leave staff members who aren't involved in whatever issue being discussed confused and frustrated. In an effort to figure out why the email was sent in the first place, staff members start asking around as to the reason behind the email, which the management says is gossip and dissent. When this was brought to the management's attention, nothing was done about it. In fact, another email was sent stating that the management was unhappy with all the gossip , they knew who was doing the gossip and planned to do something about it to the perceived offending parties, and even went so far to say in the email that, "if you think your secret(of gossiping about them) is safe, think again". Maturity at its finest. Additionally, the management only looks out for their own, not subordinates . Managers will brag of going to corporate meetings and "buying 50 dollar doubles of scotch on the company dime", as if this somehow makes them in some way superior to whoever has to listen to this drivel. Also management can often be heard saying, "you have no idea how much is done for 'you people'", or "you don't know how hard this job is". Management is not supposed to be easy.... and griping to your subordinates about your woes... well if you work here, be prepared to listen to it all… and listen to it often. If you like being left out of the decision-making process when it comes to taking a flight, this is your place to work. Management will hear the tones, be out the door and in some instances have the aircraft running before you even have your boots on. While this may be fine on a nice clear night, it’s pretty unacceptable when the weather is iffy and you may have questions about it. Management makes no bones about the fact that medical crewmembers are passengers, and their assistance isn’t required to safely operate the aircraft. Management will flat our say to your face that your input concerning aviation matters as a medical crew member isn’t warranted.. In a true testament to the wisdom(or lack thereof) of this company's management skills, PHI Air Medical has deemed some of these managers worthy of teaching you AMRM or even running safety programs.
