Pros

- The hours are reasonably flexible. - Overall, driving is a fun job. - Sometimes we get free product. - On the surface, the pay isn't bad.

Cons

I am a delivery driver in a greater Seattle area store. As a delivery driver, you are expected to provide your own vehicle, insurance, etc. Rain City Pizza, the franchisee running the Washington and Oregon Papa John's stores, only pays $0.85 a run to drivers. They have a formula where they assume that every delivery is a four mile round trip (provably false, but management doesn't care) and that your car gets 20 MPG or better (maybe half of us get that). Then based on that they set the mileage to cover your fuel costs. Thus, the mileage reimbursement doesn't even cover your gas. Of course, there's more to operating a vehicle than gas - depreciation, repairs, oil changes, brakes, tires, all need to be taken care of at an accelerated rate. If you're not driving a beater and you're not somewhat handy, this is not the job for you. Further, a few years ago, experienced drivers were getting $1.25 a run and new drivers were getting $1.00 a run. When gas prices went up, our mileage did not. When gas prices went back down and when the minimum wage went up in 2009, they cut our mileage reimbursement to make up the difference. Another issue is the delivery charge. Customers now get charged $3 a delivery for us to deliver to them. Most customers think that the driver gets that money and thus tip less. Drivers live and die on their tips, and frankly the delivery charge deception hurts us badly. Management sees no difference between the veteran driver who is making four deliveries an hour and the driver who only makes one. If you are a good driver you *will* have to take up the slack for the bad drivers in all aspects of the job and you won't get anything more than a thank you from your GM for doing it.
