Pros
The customers: 95% or better are friendly, and share in common with the associates a love of animals. I have met some great people through PetSmart. The associates: creative, knowledgeable, quirky & diverse group of people, each bringing different strengths and assets to the table. PetSmart encourages furthering your knowledge and education about all departments. I have learned a ton of information on pet care, nutrition, etc.
Cons
Some of the lowest hourly wages in retail - Corporate seems to take advantage of employees' love of animals and deep desire to help and benefit all pets. Raises unofficially cannot be more than 25 cents at a time. They keep part-time associates under 33 hours so that no one associate really gets enough hours to make it worth their while, but discourage taking on second jobs. I made way less than $20,000 last year - gross - and that *includes* the commission I got from training classes. Some locations give fewer than 15 hours to non-management associates. Extreme opposite of "green:" stacks and stacks of thousands of stickers for price changes mailed to each PetSmart location - or printed at each store. Huge price changes occur monthly and more in between. Often times, the stickers sent are duplicates. This is just one example of the wastefulness. The processes implemented from corporate seem to have no basis in day to day operating knowledge - more like esoteric, dreamed up schemes from the glass offices at HQ.
