Pros

You do get to feel the pride of helping customers provide a high quality of life for their pets and you get to work with a few wonderful people here and there.

Cons

There is no support from anyone starting with the district managers and going up. If you have a complaint about someone you are working with, they will disregard it if they are friends with that person outside of work. There are many friendships among various levels of management that interfere with judgement. I saw a district manager give someone a store to manage even after several associates complained that the person was inadequate. The D.M. did so because he was buddies with the woman, possibly more. The company will promise to interview you for a promotion, but will not keep their word, and loss prevention is useless. They do not help you prevent theft in the least which then impacts the stores performance which you get blamed for. Human resources is a joke as well, when conducting an investigation, they will not interview key witnesses and will just interview whoever is working the day they show up to investigate. All in all, if you want to help customers while getting no support from superiors, go for it. But if you want to be respected and acknowledged, go to Petsmart.

Pros

- Wonderful people under the Sr. Director level - Dogs in the office - Brand name carries weight on your resume

Cons

- Sr. Directors and above are largely nepotism hires rather than merit-based promotions - Leadership team is toxic and disrespectful, and that tone trickles down to other senior leaders - Gender favoritism shows up repeatedly, with women being asked to pick up the work of men without additional pay. Or men being promoted over women due to favoritism and not merit. - Nearly every employee I worked with was disengaged and functioning out of fear of layoffs rather than job satisfaction (layoffs happen multiple times a year) - The company's declining position also makes it harder to land your next role, since a recent Petco title now reads as coming from a struggling brand
