No support - Adunct Faculty Member Portland Community College Employee Review

Pros

Autonomy - until a student complains

Cons

Students prioritized over part time faculty: you will be asked to tailor your assignments and due dates for as many as 20% of the students. You will be asked to update curriculum without pay. You will be on call 24/7 whereas your dept chair, full time faculty, and/or dean won’t answer most of your emails, and certainly not within 24 hrs. There is no mentorship outside of the voluntary, unpaid generic classes and workshops.

Pros

The people. PCC hires many wonderful, talented, well-meaning people who really care about their community. Other pros include, flexibility like being able to choose your own schedule, and trust in hired employees to do their work on their terms.

Cons

Major con is how messy the entire college seems to be. Massive lack in any semblance of effective communication. Nobody seems to know whats going on and everyone is almost always on a different page. Company structure is always changing and people are never notified in an organized or timely manner. Everyone seems spread too thin regardless of what position they are in and nobody seems to have the time to get on the same page. Layoffs seem to be commonly caused by lack of planning and communication. Onboarding was practically nonexistent and as a new employee i basically had to figure out everything on my own without any guidance.
