Strong teachers union protects instructors - Instructor Portland Community College Employee Review

Pros

Strong teaching union protects full and part time instructors

Cons

Even with the good union, a strong caste system exists between administrators, full time instructors and part time instructors. Part time instructors can have their classes taken from them by full instructors and left with less pay. This routinely happens with enrollment dips. This is not the fault of the full timers but rather a direct result of the caste system the administration allows to exist.

Pros

The people. PCC hires many wonderful, talented, well-meaning people who really care about their community. Other pros include, flexibility like being able to choose your own schedule, and trust in hired employees to do their work on their terms.

Cons

Major con is how messy the entire college seems to be. Massive lack in any semblance of effective communication. Nobody seems to know whats going on and everyone is almost always on a different page. Company structure is always changing and people are never notified in an organized or timely manner. Everyone seems spread too thin regardless of what position they are in and nobody seems to have the time to get on the same page. Layoffs seem to be commonly caused by lack of planning and communication. Onboarding was practically nonexistent and as a new employee i basically had to figure out everything on my own without any guidance.
