Pros

A lot of flexibility in work location and schedule as long as you can get your work done. Work remotely as much as you want provided you can still perform your job duties. The most diverse and inclusive office environment I’ve ever worked in. Bonuses when financial goals are met, OT is paid. Employee engagement events such as giveback events, happy hours, and an annual company gathering. Great place for young professionals to get their start. There are company sponsored seminars and book studies to help younger engineers develop professional skills. They cross train whenever possible and layoffs are done as a last resort. Some very knowledgeable and helpful people work there.

Cons

Remote work has been taking a toll on project quality in some parts of the company. Groups have a tendency of siloing off from one another and failing to communicate key information resulting in frequent fire drills. Bonuses are tied solely to company performance, so it’s easy for slackers to fly under the radar while high-performers carry the burden. Training still leaves a lot to be desired. Experienced new hires still need some job-specific training before getting thrown into the deep end. While the company has grown considerably in recent years, there’s still a decent amount of small office politics going on. Don’t rock the boat. They can be stingy when it comes to discretionary spending. You have to pack a lunch or pay out of pocket when traveling to job sites less than 60 miles away. They practice open book management but the system was never really tailored to a consulting engineering company. What good is forecasting IT and printing costs for the month when we are having utilities projects consistently over-budget by tens of thousands of dollars. Corporate is slow to recognize and accept that there are areas in need of improvement. It’s much easier to label recent departures as complainers or blame a high turnover rate on a hot job market.
