“The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leader is willing to tolerate.” - Gruenter and Whitaker In the past few months, Privia has done a lot to try to correct for its bad behavior when it comes to how they recruit and retain employees. Unfortunately, there is a dichotomy between how leadership views culture and the reality that middle management and frontline employees face each day. Even as the new leader calls for changes in how Privia approaches its diversity and retention issues, they then go on to praise the one person who is at the very core of those issues. As a Partner, I find it extremely disheartening to see the company attempt to course correct as they continue to prop up someone who is the root cause of dissatisfaction. I will leave one example that epitomizes my experiences at Privia. At one point a newly hired male with the same background, experience, and degree as me was given a much higher salary and title. As a loyal employee with great performance reviews, responsible for some pretty high-profile and high-value work, I was admittedly a little confused. I met with the senior leader referenced in my first paragraph and reasonably asked why I was not being treated equitably and what I might do differently to get to the same level and pay. I was given neither constructive feedback nor a pathway for how I might accomplish the same level/pay. Instead I was told, "You should just be happy with where you are as a woman". The senior leader who said that to me has said equally horrible things to, and about, other employees and yet they continue to be praised in company-wide meetings. (See any of the negative reviews for examples. Please ignore most of the positive ones... this person routinely pressures employees to post positive feedback). So yes, it's quite disheartening to have Privia's current leader proclaim a culture change is coming and at the same time see the person responsibly for the toxic environment publicly praised and tolerated.
