Public Storage ROBS its customers and takes advantage of its employees. From one stranger to another, SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE AND WORK ANYWHERE ELSE. First and foremost, if you recognize the difference between a Franchise (like your local McDonald’s or Pizza Hut) and a Corporation (like Apple or Public Storage) - you know how terrible it can be for both the customer and the employee with very limited power. Public Storage’s California Headquarters mandates every move of ALL PS locations across the country - all the way down to how merchandise is displayed on-site to the rental rates of units to the digital time listing on office telephones (no matter the timezone it’s actually located in). Just imagine trying to find out the details of your auctioned-off unit or negotiating your storage bill with a person whose cost-of-living is 38% higher, receiving 40% more in annual income than those living in the rest of the United States… you better have the legal claim ready for filing otherwise you won't achieve much. When applying for a “Property Manager” (PM) position, as posted online - individuals are hired in as “Relief Managers” (RFM) traveling from location to location (within an assigned district) to manage a property on the regularly scheduled “PM’s” day off. This position entails running the property as if you were in the same role, with the same base knowledge of customer accounts/property details, and play the acting role of PM while the other individual is away. The description of duties in the online position posting is FAR FROM the actual day-to-day responsibilities of individuals in the role. Both RFM’s and PM’s are paid the same, barely livable wage ($10/hr) - sold with the “bountiful benefit programs” that PS swoons about, but is awarded to the rare and few that most will never see the benefits from. Each day employees are expected to clean empty units, manage up-keep on the property (including bugs, vermin, and other facility requirements), clean on-site facilities (bathrooms, hallways, office spaces, elevators, etc.). All the while, placing recorded phone calls following a specific scripting to 15-50 customers, sell merchandise, seek new tenants/provide in-person customer service, and meet required margins in various categories monitored by the District Manager and Regional Manager. Save yourself the headache and work somewhere, ANYWHERE, else.
