Great benefits and company culture, but being ruined by individuals and growth - Pharmacy Technician Publix Employee Review

Pros

Publix has the best benefits package I have seen in the grocery industry and I was grateful for my 401k and stock option when the economy stumbled. I loved working in the stores that had a store family feel, you can really see why so many families keep Publix in the family. I know lots of couples who've met there and both grew within the company and then bring their children into the company as well. That's a good recommendation when you want your children there as well.

Cons

That family feel has been seeping away as the company grows and there are too many people hired who do not believe in the George Jenkins philosophy. Managers that do not take care of their associates and talk behind their customers back are becoming the norm and it creates animosity and hostility in the store. It seems the company has expanded too fast to monitor these individuals, because this attitude doesn't always show in the numbers.

Pros

Good compensation including not just standard pay, but also end of year bonus 80 hours for hourly associates, 8% of your annual earnings granted to you in free company stock thru which quarterly dividends are paid, ok 401k, and gift card and other associate coupons. Good stability and growth. Good company culture.

Cons

Can be slow and resistant to change. Uses some antiquated systems and software that should have been replaced years ago. Does some things that don't make sense. Some managers can be good, while others not very good. Although these cons may be true for a lot of companies. All roads eventually lead to Lakeland where they are headquartered. Geography can be a big one if you are not a Florida native. If you don't want to live in Florida for some legitimate reasons, there can be limited job options in other states, especially if you aren't interested in retail or warehouse jobs. Standard retail negatives about not having a lot of holidays off.
