Subpar Research and Lack of Empathy - Graduate Research/Teaching Assistant Purdue University Employee Review

Pros

Lots of analytical instrumentation. Large variety of research. Great to work with undergraduates.

Cons

Treat graduate students like mules. No sympathy from administration or faculty. Would've left sooner if a degree wasn't attached to the work. I'm sure it's not much better for post-docs or staff scientists. Teaching for chemistry is also a joke. Labs don't work and the prep lab doesn't know what they're doing.

Pros

Strong scientific training and excellent research environment. Supportive academic atmosphere with opportunities to collaborate across disciplines. Well-known reputation in pharmaceutical sciences and engineering. Programs like PULSE provide valuable networking, professional development, and exposure to interdisciplinary research. Access to experienced faculty and good research facilities.

Cons

Graduate student experience can vary significantly by department, program, and PI. Not all programs offer first-year lab rotations; in some departments, students commit to a research advisor before starting, which provides less flexibility if the research fit is not ideal. Work-life balance and mentoring quality depend heavily on the individual research group. Winters in Indiana can be long and cold for those unfamiliar with the climate.
