Pros

Holidays and 15 days of vacation

Cons

RLI has an organizational strategy called "Futurization". Its goal is to modernize the organizations applications and infrastructure. There is exists a tremendous amount of resistance / pushback by the business side of the house against this strategy. This has caused much frustration and turnover within the IT side of the house There are many opportunities within RLI to gain a competitive advantage through the use of Technology, unfortunately the resistance to change prevents these opportunities from being exploited IT employees are not thought of as "Business Partners". Instead, IT employees are treated (by the business) more like contractors or "serfs". It’s almost like being treated as a second-class citizen. In addition, poor IT decisions are pushed through by businesspeople who lack the IT knowledge to make these recommendations or decisions. The Salary is not consistent with the Market. In addition, raises are small. The last raise that was distributed was less than < 3%. After taxes and deductions, the annual bonus ends up being about 6-7% of your salary. The ESOP has a long vesting period, so you will have to have years of employee to gain this benefit. Software releases are frequently (every 2 weeks) and occur very early Saturday morning. These occur from 5-6 CST, so if you are working remote expect to get up very early.

Pros

RLI has a strong employee-ownership culture and a work environment where people are trusted to take ownership of what they do. The company is relatively flat, which gives employees visibility, access to leadership, and a better understanding of how their work affects the broader organization. Senior management is approachable in a way I have not experienced at other companies, and there is a real effort to listen to employee feedback through direct conversations, exit interviews, and companywide surveys. I also appreciate working with people who care about doing their jobs well and understand that their performance and conduct affect the company as a whole. For employees who are self-starters, think strategically, and take pride in their work, RLI can be a very positive place to build a career.

Cons

Because RLI is relatively flat and gives people a lot of ownership, it may not be the best fit for someone who wants a highly structured environment, frequent direction, or a clearly mapped career path at every step. Advancement and development often require self-advocacy, patience, resourcefulness, and a willingness to look for opportunities rather than waiting for them to be handed to you. That is not necessarily a negative, but it can be an adjustment depending on what type of environment someone is used to.
